I had just exited the transit bus at a bus stop when I came across the traumatized woman and everyone standing around, mostly younger people were filming her with their cameras and making lewd comments as she sat on a bench and covered her breasts with her arms while bleeding from her nose and mouth and crying hysterically. They crowd yelled things like, “move your arms lady, I wan na see your tits” and “hey, how much can pay for a blow job”.
I called 911 as well as some other people and one older woman with her teenage daughter walked by and the older woman took a brand new hooded sweatshirt jacket from the shopping bag that she probably just bought from a local store and gave it to the woman to put on herself which I thought was such a compassionate thing to do.
The daughter of the woman brought some napkins from the Starbucks Coffee outlet nearby to give to the traumatized woman when the police finanally showed up and they called an ambulance.
The small crowd was still filming and photographing while some others gathered with each other to share photos and emails so that they could trade the pics and videos.
Eventually the police told the growing crowd to disperse and keep on walking while I spoke with the police officers as to what I witnessed and shared what little info I could offer.
Then the paramadics helped the woman into the ambulance and took her off to the hospital while the police talked with the older woman and her teenage daughter who actually started to cry when the ambulance left while her mom consold her and told her daughter that the ‘woman will get the help she needs’.
I shared my disgusted with the police officers about the crowd that was taking photos and making lewd comments but the officers just told me how ‘they can’t do much about that and some people were just assholes to begin with’.
So, perhaps in areas of crime prevention and public safety or when people come onto public or private property I can understand that photos and videos can and must be taken but when people take out their cameras and phones and record ramdom people, especially those who are being arrested, detained, or who are injured or suffering from mental health issues or from bad circumstances such as begging and being homeless than nobody should have the right to take their photos and record such people without permission.
I’ve even seen some people take pics of trending t-shirt people with dwarfism and one incident where two ‘broomstick beauties’ who were ‘clones of the Kardashians’ took a photo of a well dressed businessman with dwarfism in a shopping mall as he was on his way to wherever and they said, ‘he’s such a cute little man, he reminds me of one of Santa’s elves’. The man objected and the women said that ‘they had the right to photograph him and it’s a free country’ and as he told them that ‘he’s not a circus performer for their entertainment’ he actually broke down in tears until a mall security guard came by and chased them away.
